Music

INTENT

At Holbeton Primary School we follow the Charanga Music Scheme, which provides a progressive and engaging approach to music teaching and learning. The curriculum aims to inspire pupils to develop a lifelong love of music while building their confidence as performers, composers and listeners.

Through a broad and balanced music curriculum, pupils explore a wide range of musical styles, genres and traditions from different cultures and historical periods. Children are encouraged to express themselves creatively, work collaboratively and develop an appreciation for the role music plays in society and everyday life.

The Charanga scheme supports the delivery of the National Curriculum for Music, ensuring that pupils develop key musical knowledge, skills and understanding while fostering creativity, enjoyment and musical curiosity.

IMPLEMENTATION

The music curriculum at Holbeton Primary School is delivered through the Charanga Music Scheme, which provides structured units of work that progressively build pupils’ musical skills and knowledge across the primary years.

Each unit of learning is centred around a song or piece of music and integrates the key strands of musical learning:

  • Listening and Appraising
  • Singing
  • Playing Instruments
  • Improvising
  • Composing
  • Performing

Children have regular opportunities to sing, play tuned and untuned instruments, listen to and analyse music, and create their own compositions. These activities allow pupils to develop their understanding of key musical elements such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure.

Lessons follow a clear sequence that supports skill development over time. Musical knowledge and skills are revisited regularly, enabling pupils to build confidence and deepen their understanding as they progress through the school.

Music technology and high-quality recordings provided through the Charanga platform support teaching and learning, allowing pupils to experience a wide variety of musical styles including classical, pop, rock, jazz, hip hop and world music.

IMPACT

The impact of the music curriculum at Holbeton Primary School is that pupils develop confidence, creativity and enjoyment in music.

Children become increasingly able to listen critically to music, discuss musical features and reflect on their own performances. Through singing, playing instruments and composing, pupils gain practical musical skills while also developing teamwork, concentration and self-expression.

Assessment takes place through observation, performance opportunities and discussion, allowing teachers to monitor pupils’ progress in musical skills and understanding.

By the time pupils leave Holbeton Primary School they will:

  • Sing with confidence and control, both individually and as part of a group
  • Play tuned and untuned instruments with increasing accuracy and expression
  • Listen to and appraise a range of musical styles and traditions
  • Improvise and compose simple pieces of music
  • Perform to an audience and reflect on their musical learning
  • Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National Curriculum for Music.
